Plot: The US Coast Guard version of “Top Gun” with a little “An Officer and A Gentleman” thrown in: an aging USCG rescue swimmer’s team is killed in a horrific rescue mission. Immediately prior to this terrible event, his wife also announced that she cannot take anymore. His first love is always the rescue mission. This leaves him an obviously emotional wreck. His commender gives him a choice – quit or take a position as an instructor at the USCG training facility in Louisiana. Reluctantly he takes the position. Moving into the school, he immediately increases the 18 week curriculum that routinely fails half of the people that attend. Here he meets a young man with unlimited potential, but with some secret that seems to hold him back as a team player. Delving into his past, links are found that make him a psychic twin to the older man. Thrown into the midst of the story is a romance with a local girl. Rescue missions punctuate the beginning and end of the story with the training sessions the center of the film.

What do I do if My Mother won't take me to the Doctor?
Hi, I’m sixteen, last time I went to the doctor about a certain spot which he said was a cyst. About a week ago it randomly started bleeding and it is still bleeding a little. I’ve looked at it and there is this red jellylike substance on top of the opening(where it started bleeding) and there is a dark circle around it (probably the spot). It’s in a really bad place(right where the leg connects to the groin) so it hurts sometimes. I want to go to the doctor about it but my mom won’t let me and if any she’s making me wait a month before I can go. It’s been bleeding for about a week so I’m kinda worried and want to get it checked….. last time the doctor even SAID to come back if it isn’t gone. So what should I do? Is there a way I can just go to the doctor without a guardian?

I would book myself an appointment, if you are not old enough ask someone who i old enough to go with you.
Frankee | Feb 07, 2010

To be quite honest i’ve had the exact same thing.
The cyst like bump on your groin area is an infected oil gland of your skin.
They are most common in your groin area and arm pits.
Tell your mother that it is extremely pain full and hard to bare, im sure she’ll take you back if she knows that your in extreme discomfort.
To get rid of the infected oil gland you need to be on antibiotics. Usually Cloxicillin 500mg, a type of Penicillin that fights of the infection. Also you should be prescribed an antibiotic anti bacterial soap, usually phisohex; to clean the infected area.
These infections can clear up on their own, but that could take months.
Tell your mother that you need another appointment, let her know how much discomfort your in.

Best of luck.
Vrichh | Feb 07, 2010

Call the doctor and talk to them on the phone or a nurse / nurse practitioner. If they say that these symptoms are normal and you can wait, then relax. But if they say come in, sit down with your mom and say that you called the doctor / nurse / nurse practitioner and you need an appointment. If that still doesn’t work, find someone with a car that can drive you to a free clinic and get treated there.

Are there any Richard Price readers out there?
I have recently discovered his books and have just read 2.
Clockers and Samaritan. Excellent reading. Can’t wait to start the next one. Freedomland.

What do you think of his writing?

Haz, I will look up your recommendations on Saturday when I go on my bookshop/library jaunt.

At least you and I read worthwhile stuff!!

I love Richard Price. I haven’t read his last couple titles, but I surely will. I think Clockers is one of the finest novels in the last twenty years. It rose immediately to the top ranks of my favorites. Strike’s character is just one of the many things that blows me away about it. I’m always forcing it on people. Freedomland is another favorite. I’m constantly amazed by the things he manages to pull off. He is never predictable, and he consistently makes perfect sense. Unlike many authors he is a genius with both plot and characterization and his observational powers are as truly beautiful as his descriptions. All his old stuff is good too, by the way, though his scope has broadened considerably through the years.

As a side note, you might also enjoy Dennis Lehane and George P. Pelecanos, both of whom are geniuses. All three of them have also written for the TV series The Wire.

Thanks for reminding me that it’s about time for me to catch up with Price’s latest work, and for mentioning a great author, just because you like him. It was truly refreshing to find this question. Happy reading! You can’t go wrong with Price.

I’d never heard of him A, but I’ve just had a little mooch on google and he sounds right up my street!

So I shall go and seek ( will try Library first but don’t hold out much hope it’s run by a team of cut throat Grey Panthers who save all the good books for their mates!)

Have you read Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides? The blurb about Richard Price reminded me of this book. It was a great read and really evocative .http://www.curledup.com/middlesx.htm

Ooooh Haz loves reading too!

In all seriousness, Has anyone really thought about this?
I have reprinted this question for those that may have missed it. If you have already then kindly just ignore and be at peace. Thanks.

Now for the question.

While everyone is nick picking and fighting with each other as to the question if God exist, or if Jesus did walk the earth, If the bible is true. Has anyone stopped to think about actually picking up the bible, and reading the whole thing, understanding that everything it speaks of has happened in the history of man, How The Old testament speaks of what things were back before Jesus, and that with the crucifixion of Jesus a New covenant and set of rules and ways of receiving God’s grace? Is it possible that those that squabble amongst themselves aren’t listening or hearing The truth, and coming up with their own truths? Seriously think about it, before you answer. Let’s see how many actually hear what I am saying, which God is saying, which Jesus is saying. How many will really listen and how many will turn from the truth and their own salvation, for the price of being self?

I have read it many times….thanks. And each time I do, it makes less and less sense to me.

I wonder why jesus could never heal an amputee, or why he thought disease was caused by "demons", when, as an all knowing god, he would have known about germ theory.

"How The Old testament speaks of what things were back before Jesus, and that with the crucifixion of Jesus a New covenant and set of rules and ways of receiving God’s grace?"

This is extremely offensive, untrue, and pagan with its human sacrifice.

MaidinKent | Feb 07, 2010

you are actually asking people to accept that the bible is "living document" and that the ideals and morals set down in its pages are just as acceiptable today as thousands of years ago? gosh. i guess you want people to actually read the thing with an open mind, too.
bear | Feb 07, 2010

I am a Christian and I have read it twice. It will be three times before the end of 2010. There is more needed than just reading though. Reflecting and studying the Word is important too.
Jim | Feb 07, 2010

I have read the Bible and the Book of Mormon and the book about the Flying Spaghetti monster. All those books sound like stories. Just stories. Sure it would be great to have a loving God and the idea that Jesus walked among us and died for us….it sounds good, but sounding good does not mean Truth.
Side note: The Bible says that God created the earth in six days…what about million year old fossils? -the Bible was written for people, so 6 days is literally 6 24 hour days(Nuff said).
Michael | Feb 07, 2010

Wow you have really lost it if you think because you can pick up a book and read it that it is true . Have you ever read Pinochio ? If so then how long is your nose ? How can you call those writings the truth ? The truth is something either known or self evident and all you believers profess that you have faith that it might be true or you believe it might be true , never do you know for sure .
Tom | Feb 07, 2010

people can’t believe in something they consider fantasy

they have to be called by god to understand it and believe

Joh 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

since they can not believe they make up their own truth
God's servant | Feb 07, 2010

I’ve argued and I’ve read parts of it but not the whole thing. I have to say about 70 – 60% read and 30 – 40 percent not read. The irony is that, Atheists like myself actually do read the bible sometimes. Not for religious purposes but as training to get ready for creationists to attack them. If they never do, atheists will never lash back cause there’s nothing to lash back at.

Lawl, God’s grace…if you understand what that meant, I will personally give you a cookie.
DarkZerker | Feb 07, 2010

Yes I have read the whole thing, confirmed Lutheran and am currently studying it at university. Maybe you should read it from an objective viewpoint and look at it exactly for what it is – not truth, savage, barbaric in the OT and self-contradicting in the NT. Unfortunately people back in the days of Constantine were not very educated when it came to canonizing a flawless book. The more you study the book in context the more you realize how people today just choose to believe what they want to believe.
Nadine Ne vem | Feb 07, 2010

You will find that there are far fewer Christians that have read the entire Bible than atheists: The reason I know the Bible is mostly plagiarized material from other cultures comes from my studies in ancient near eastern writings as well as all biblical material.

Ignorance among Christians/Muslims is far greater than amongst atheists; your attempt at leading is an attempt of the blind trying to tell the one’s with 20/20 vision what is real!
Gnosisquest | Feb 07, 2010

I picked up the Bible a long time ago when I was still a Methodist. The more I read, the less sense it all made, until finally I had to put it down again.

The elements in the Bible fall into two categories. Some are simply histories of specific figures of some interest to the people of that time and region. I have no particular problem with the stories in that context.

The elements that give me problems are examples of what happens when ignorant, superstitious, but curious shepherds tried to explain phenomena they could not have understood without years of schooling of a type that didn’t exist back then. Since they believed in magic and had to come up with some kind of explanation, the created a magician called God. Then, anything they couldn’t explain any other way caused them to say "Goddidit."

Considering all the pantheons that Christians have rejected and the ones I have rejected, there is really only one difference between my brand of atheism and your brand of Christianity. I have rejected one more God than you did. That’s it, that’s the difference.
The_Doc_Man | Feb 07, 2010

A book without any corroborating evidence is just a book. Nothing more.

The world is full of such books.
Andrew H | Feb 07, 2010

With all the respect, yes, I have read it and I still read it. However, I don’t really think the Bible alone holds The Truth. Most of the Bible was referred to a people and a time that have nothing to do with us and our times right now. Reading for reference is one thing. Reading and taking it as the whole truth is something totally different. I am sorry, but there is more to know beside the Bible.

Now, I ask you, would you close your Bible for a while and just think for yourself? Did you ever talk to God, just you and Him, and dare to ask Him to show you the truth? To show you the way?

Peace!
Janet Reincarnated | Feb 07, 2010

Wow. You make even less sense than the Bible. I didn’t think that was possible.

Look, I know you really want Jesus to be real and loving, but he just isn’t. Don’t use the incoherent, idiotic, unrealistic Bible as any kind of truth, because it’s not. I’m sorry to break it to you.

Also, please don’t automatically assume that because you’re supporting God, that he has your opinion. "What I am saying, which God is saying, which Jesus is saying". Just listen to yourself! You sound crazy. I’m listening to what you’re saying, but it’s gibberish.

I think you need to just read through what you’ve written – seriously, do it – but from an atheist’s point of view. I’ve asked my share of questions, and once I got one deleted. I read through it as many times as I could, from a Christian’s point of view, to see if I’d offended anyone, and I think that helped a lot. Just… try and see the world from our perspective, and you’ll find it makes a lot more sense.

I know this won’t change your mind – but I’m just answering the question. Yes, I have thought about this. And I’ve rejected it. I’m just telling you where us atheists are coming from.
Destrii | Feb 07, 2010

Anyone watch "The Revolutionary Holocaust- Live Free.. or Die"?
If so, what did you think?

People should watch it. PROGRESSIVES ARE ALIVE AND WELL IN THIS COUNTRY and are trying to take it over.

It is a SHAME they want to rewrite the history books and take out all our history and start at 1870. Just so the kids could have a CONNECTION with history.

What connection when you don’t know the start of this country and slavery and other important things that make AMERICA what it is. It is THIS TYPE OF PROGRESSIVE THINKING that will allow this video to be true. When you can’t learn from history…YOU WILL REPEAT IT!

When you take out the history of the U.S and put in OPRAH and the brainwashing of PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL TEACHERS….you are lost.

I am sickened by this change….and they continue to do small things like this to change AMERICA and indoctrinate the children before you understand where it came from.

I am proud to know others can see things that are happening and bring it to our attention.

You can choose to be a koolaide drinker and hide your head in the sand or look at the bigger picture and realize….things are happening that are in the background…subtle things like rewriting history books and stopping the learning of writing in school etc….that will contribute to the bigger picture.

TEACH OUR CHILDREN THE TRUTH ABOUT HISTORY…ALL OF OUR HISTORY! Good God….EUROPE learns about their history…THOUSANDS OF YEARS OLD and we can’t teach our children about a couple hundred years?

PROGRESSIVES are taking over and we are allowing it to happen. Beck is bringing the truth out…and you can scoff at it if you want…but he didn’t make up THAT VIDEO..it came from AMERICANS and it came from this administration!

People will pick at one word such as socialist etc and pick it to death and not see the whole picture….like this administration they continue to deny….and they continue to try to push us to be like EUROPE. WE ARE NOT LIKE EUROPE…we never wanted to be like them. WE ARE WHO WE ARE and we are proud of it.

Pay attention people…don’t let them get their toe in the door…they will not leave!

People will refuse to see what this means…just what it says…but dems and libbies are famous for not seeing and hearing what is going on. No matter how many times you tell them….they pick on something and try to change it. LISTENING is more than hearing words..it is UNDERSTANDING THE MESSAGE! Something dems cannot do.

America on Bush's Watch | Feb 04, 2010

No I didn’t, but based on the other answers I can take an educated guess on what it was about. Once again Fox is telling it’s viewers (hence forth known as Foxshit for brains) that Hitler was a socialist. That’s a lie. Hitler may have ran as a socialist because that gave him the best chance of winning, but once he did win he put forth the far right policies that made him the most hated man in history. It was a bait and switch, pure and simple. If you want to prove me wrong, here’s how. Find me one neo-nazi who has a socialist agenda. A real one, not someone who wants national health care just for the five seconds you introduce me to him, like Hitler.

Hitler ran as a socialist the same way Bush ran as a compassionate conservative.

Another thing I noticed is that the same brave souls who say "live free or die" are the same people who say "Well if it will keep me safe when I fly, I’ll be glad to give up my Constitutional rights"

A step back in quitting smoking….?
I’ve been attempting to quit smoking and I had a slip today after abstaining from cigarettes for twelve days. I understand I’ll have to double down now to prevent the slip from becoming a full blown relapse; but I was wondering, am I going to physically feel the exact same withdrawal effects that I went through the last time? Or should they be a bit milder because I only have the nicotine of one cigarette in my bloodstream.

I feel pretty stupid about the slip, and I’m serious about quitting, but I’m a little tense right now thinking that I’m going to feel like I did the first 48+ hours. I’d like to know if I should prepare to feel like absolute garbage again or if I can relax a bit about physiological repercussions and focus on the psychological addiction that led to my slip.

In advance- thank you for your time .

i think that sice you only had the one slip, it won’t be as tough with the withdrawl effects, cause you didn’t have as much nicotine in your boday as when you first quit…good luck!!

Does horror movies really matter?
long story short my mom believes in bad demons and such.
she thinks if i buy movies like the grudge 5ive Girls Exorcism Of Emily Rose the haunting in Connecticut that we will get bad demons in the house and bad things will start to happen? she told me to never bring harry potter in the house. and i did anyways and its been in the house for a year with out her owning and nothings happened. shes very superstitious i guess you can say. she worryed about me bring twilight into the house because it has a vampire in it.?? also she tryed throwing away my butterfly effect.
i dont really believe movies can bring in bad things but shes kinda got me spooked a little.

do you believe movies like that bad bring demons in the house or something??
ohh and the harry potter was a book i was reading.

Hi,I Bought and watched like 15 Scary movies in 2-3 days,And even to a Film fanatic it can alter perception a little bit.I Was Seeing Shadows for weeks,Lol.
As to answer the question,To a superstitious Person, yeah It brings bad "Carma",I would think.
But to a scary movie fan,it shouldn’t really make a difference.
It sounds to me Like she is a Religious Woman,or has a phobia of things like that.
Sometimes though people just avoid things like that, and some take it to the extreme.
It might cause some disturbed dreams, but nothing supernatural will become of watching movies.

your mom is crazy. a movie is a movie it was made on a set, filmed, then transfered to the DVD you get at the store. NOTHING remotely harmful there. granted the haunting in connecticut was based on true events, doesnt matter. no evil souls are in your house i promise dude. theyre just movies.

its all a mind set really if you continue to listen to certain things over and over you’ll find yourself starting to believe and wen you’re scared u’d be amazed at the things your mingd can make u think is there when its actually not soo if ure scared jus keep tellin urself tht ur not and how ridiculous the situation is in the first place and eventually u’ll begin to believe it …………it worked for me i had to do tht alot after i watched mirrors :)
